Magic Mushroom Dosage Calculator

Find a safe starting dose of dried psilocybin mushrooms for your body weight, chosen intensity and experience level — built from harm-reduction and clinical dosing research.

Experience level

Enter your weight above to see a personalised starting dose.

Estimates are for dried Psilocybe cubensis on an empty stomach. Potency varies a lot between batches — always start at the low end of the range.

Getting your magic mushroom dose right

Magic mushrooms open up experiences that range from a gentle lift in mood and creativity to a deep, introspective journey — and the difference almost always comes down to dose. Psilocybin, the active compound, affects everyone a little differently, so the same amount can feel light for one person and intense for another.

This calculator gives you a sensible starting dose based on your body weight, the intensity you’re after and how much experience you have. Treat it as a guide, not a guarantee: potency swings between batches and sensitivity swings between people. Whatever number you land on, begin at the lower end and work up over future sessions.

How to use the calculator

  1. Enter your body weight in kilograms or pounds. It’s one input among several — a gentle adjustment, not the whole story.
  2. Pick an intensity. From a sub-perceptual microdose to a full psychedelic experience — each tier explains what to expect.
  3. Choose your experience level. First-timers are steered toward a lower, more manageable dose.
  4. Start low. Take the suggestion as a ceiling for your first time and go a touch under. You can always take more next time — never less once you’ve dosed.

Magic mushroom dosage chart

Standard tiers for dried Psilocybe cubensis. These are whole-mushroom weights, measured on a milligram scale, taken on an empty stomach.

Tier Dried grams ≈ Psilocybin What to expect
Microdose 0.1–0.25 g ~1–2.5 mg Sub-perceptual — no “trip”. A subtle lift some people use for focus, mood or creativity while staying fully in control.
Museum 0.25–1 g ~2.5–10 mg A light, functional dose — brighter colours, a gentle body glow, still grounded. Named for enjoying a gallery or a walk in nature.
Moderate 1–2.5 g ~10–25 mg The classic psychedelic experience — visuals, emotional depth and shifts in thought. Best with a free afternoon and a calm setting.
High 2.5–5 g ~25–50 mg Intense and immersive, with strong visuals and ego softening. For experienced users only, with a trusted sitter and a cleared schedule.
Heroic 5 g + 50 mg + Terence McKenna’s “five grams in silent darkness.” Profound and potentially overwhelming — seasoned users only, fully prepared, with a sober sitter present.

Psilocybin figures assume roughly 0.5–1% of dry weight and are rough estimates only — real content varies by species, batch and storage.

What actually affects your dose

The mushrooms themselves

Potency swings widely by species and batch — the single biggest variable. Two grams of one batch can outweigh three of another.

Tolerance

Psilocybin tolerance builds fast and resets over about two weeks. Dosing again within days needs much more for the same effect — so wait.

Empty stomach

Food slows and softens the come-up. Dosing on an empty stomach (or 3–4 hours after eating) gives a cleaner, more predictable onset.

Body weight

A smaller factor than most expect — research finds little link between weight and the strength of the trip. We scale gently for it, not linearly.

Set & setting

Your mindset and surroundings shape the experience as much as the dose. A calm, familiar space and a settled mood make a big difference.

Method

Lemon tek and teas hit faster and can feel stronger; whole dried mushrooms come on more gradually. Keep first sessions simple.

Microdosing vs. a full experience

A microdose — roughly a tenth of a full dose, about 0.1–0.25 g — sits below the perceptual threshold. There’s no “trip”; people take it hoping for a subtle lift in focus, mood or creativity that fits around an ordinary day.

A full psychedelic experience (a moderate dose and up) is a different thing entirely: visuals, shifting thoughts and emotions, and a journey best given a free afternoon, a calm setting and no obligations.

Moving from microdosing toward a full experience? Do it gradually — step up one tier at a time across separate sessions so you learn how your body responds before going deeper. And never overlook set and setting: your mindset and surroundings shape the outcome as much as the dose itself.

Onset & duration

  1. 20–40 minCome-up begins — a light body shift and shifting visuals
  2. ~2 hoursPeak — the most intense part of the experience
  3. 3–4 hoursCome-down — effects gradually soften
  4. 4–6 hoursBaseline — mostly back to normal (longer for high doses)

Stay safe

Start low, go slow

Take the lower end of any range first, especially with a new batch. You can always add more next time — you can’t undo a dose mid-trip.

Have a sober sitter

For moderate doses and up, have a trusted, sober person present. Clear your schedule and don’t drive or operate machinery.

Know the contraindications

Never combine with lithium (seizure risk) or MAOIs. Avoid if you have a personal or family history of psychosis or bipolar disorder, or serious heart or seizure conditions. SSRIs/SNRIs usually blunt effects.

Check your meds

If you take any prescription medication or have a health condition, talk to a doctor before using psilocybin. This tool is not a substitute for medical advice.

Dosage FAQ

How many grams of mushrooms should a first-timer take?

Most first-time users start around 1–1.5 g of dried Psilocybe cubensis on an empty stomach — a moderate dose that gives a real but manageable experience. Start low: you can always take more next time, but you can’t take less once you’ve dosed.

Does body weight change the dose?

Less than most people assume. Clinical research (including work led by Johns Hopkins) has found little link between body weight and the strength of the subjective experience. This calculator applies only a gentle weight adjustment — tolerance, the specific mushrooms, an empty stomach and your mindset matter far more.

How long do magic mushrooms last?

Effects usually begin 20–40 minutes after eating (up to an hour), peak around the 2-hour mark, and taper off over a total of about 4–6 hours. Higher doses can run 6–8 hours or longer.

How much psilocybin is in a gram of dried mushrooms?

Dried cubensis is roughly 0.5–1% psilocybin by weight, so about 5–10 mg per gram — but this varies widely between batches, species and even parts of the same mushroom, so treat any milligram figure as a rough estimate.

When should I avoid psilocybin entirely?

Do not combine psilocybin with lithium (seizure risk) or MAOI medications, and it is generally contraindicated if you have a personal or family history of psychosis or bipolar disorder, or serious heart or seizure conditions. SSRIs and SNRIs usually just blunt the effects. If you take any medication or have a health condition, speak with a doctor first.

How long should I wait between mushroom trips?

Tolerance to psilocybin builds quickly and resets over roughly two weeks. Dosing again within a few days means a noticeably weaker experience, so waiting about 14 days is the usual guidance.
